In the early 1960s, Thomas Epifanides, a ship-owner, assigned to the architect Alexander Vogiatzis the construction of a small church on Tsougkria’s island, honoring Saint Floros and Saint Lavros. The architect did so, always with respect to the island’s natural environment: he unleashed his extraordinary, artistic talent and took advantage of whatever he thought useful from the land itself (mainly stones and penning). This is the history behind today’s famous “small cliff-church”, as local fishermen like to call it.
In addition, most visitors that come to Tsougkria’s island have characterized this beautiful chapel as “a magnificent, total-white ‘ornament’ in lush, total-green, natural scenery that surrounds it”.
Furthermore, the chapel is very famous for the great number of weddings that take place there, especially during the summer! Also, it is annually celebrated by locals on the 18th of August. On the same day of the celebration, most locals come to the island to attend the Divine Liturgy, by using boats from Skiathos’ port.
