Plane Spotting

Plane Spotting

Just like Saint Maarten in the Caribbean, Skiathos is famous for its extremely low landings. For extra excitement during your Skiathos holiday, be sure to come experience the thrill of planes landing just meters above your head. Facing the beach, Skiathos airport has a runway of barely 1,600 meters, flanked by waterfronts on either side and ending at a fenced-off small road. Here people gather to watch planes land and depart, making this spot one of the most popular tourist attractions on Skiathos island. It is quite exhilarating to be this close to a landing airliner – for some, too close for comfort. During takeoff, the jet engine blast is so powerful that it can blow off your hat.

Required accessories for the occasion are sunscreen, hat and sunglasses.

On the corner of the small road, is a café – snack bar offering refreshments and shade, and a large TV, tuned in to the Flightradar24 station, showing scheduled arrivals.

How to Get There:

Starting at bus stop zero at the New Port, take a short, 8-minute walk along the waterfront, keeping the sea on your right, until you reach the end of the runway.

Keep in mind, the busiest day is Fridays, and to always follow the safety instructions posted.

Remember to bring your camera. Happy shooting!
