Tsougria is a small island of Sporades -with extent 1, 14 sq.km-, located right across the port of Skiathos. Its lushness, pine trees and magical beaches attract hundreds of tourists every year, placing this small paradise on the very top of the ‘famous summer destinations’ list. Access to the island is made by Skiathos’ small cruise boats that start from the port.
In the early 1960s, Thomas Epifanides, a ship-owner, assigned to the architect Alexander Vogiatzis the construction of a small church on the island, honoring Saint Floros and Saint Lauros. The architect did so, always with respect to the island’s natural environment: he unleashed his extraordinary, artistic talent and took advantage of whatever he thought useful from the land itself (mainly stones and penning). Thus, this is the history behind today’s famous “small cliff-church”, as local fishermen like to call it. In addition, we should not neglect to mention that the island’s wetlands provide shelter to a large number of birds of Sporades’ region. Also, Tsougrias’ stories and legends report that the Beatles, in the late 60s, were thrilled by the island’s beauty and were very keen on purchasing it!
