Historical Cemetery

Skiathos’ cemetery was founded in the beginning of the 1830s, when locals, finally, left the Castle and settled back to the island’s port, after the Turkish withdrawal from the island.

Furthermore, the cemetery was, officially, integrated in the ‘European Cemeteries Route’, in 2014. The European Cemeteries Route was certified, in 2010, by the Council of Europe, and it includes 21 European countries. The Route is administered by the Association of Significant Cemeteries in Europe (ASCE). The goal is to highlight and protect the cemetery’s value, since it hosts some of the most precious sculptures of Skiathos Island.
