Skiathos architecture is different from that of other islands with their more distinct local style. It is more eclectic, taking features from island and Pilion villages, combined with neoclassical elements. The houses are usually small, two-story stone structures built closely to one another, with the exterior walls painted traditionally with lime. We encounter mainly two types of houses: the rural and the mansion.
The old narrow streets of the town are made of stone slabs. Emanating from the center of the street, these are placed in a herringbone pattern to allow rainwater drainage. In very narrow streets and at turns, the corners of the houses are beveled, in order to facilitate freer movement.
Small, picturesque squares for people to gather outside of churches and fountains can be found in various areas of the town.
